  • Gilbert High School building construction students put classroom lessons to real world use Tuesday.

Students replaced the roof and insulation of the barn at nearby Dream Riders.

"We're removing old metal and insulation and putting back new metal and insulation," said teacher Bryan Waters.

The construction and building students have worked the whole year beyond the basics. They've moved from building cabinets to building a 1,700 square foot house.

While this project may not have been their most challenging, their was a big lesson to be learned.

"It's good, like I said, to let our kids know it's good to give back to the community. And to let them know not everything's about the dollar," said Waters.

Dream Riders is a therapeutic equestrian riding and therapy for adults and children with special needs. As a non profit, it was planning to use funds from Midlands Gives for barn repairs.

"This is almost all donated, which has been a huge blessing for us. We were able to keep the money in our budget for horse care and our final goal of a covered arena," said Dream Riders lead instructor Jennifer Stoudemire.

Students expect the project to last about four days.

Best Distributing Inc.of Columbia also helped out, offering donated construction supplies.
